Steele Caramels’ Adventure Awaits
It all began with an idea.
I grew up hearing about my grandmother’s caramels. “They’re great. Nobody makes caramels like my mom,” was the refrain from my aunt and father. Around the holidays, we would wait for the “You know what my mother used to make really well…?” conversation starter, and my dad was off.
Twenty-nine years after my sister and I started making caramels, I realized the caramels could be something. Something bigger than a neighborhood treat. Apparently, Martha Lula would let each child in the neighborhood have a piece of caramel for free, but the subsequent ones were $0.01. My grandfather, Samuel A. Wells, Sr. would help cut and wrap them, demonstrating his support and love for his wife. Out of their kitchen on Ponce de Leon, Martha Lula and Samuel started something amazing. It just took a little while to make it bigger than the neighborhood.
So, here I go, into a larger caramel world. Join me on the adventure.
